We are still working on finalizing details of the event. An email confirming all relevant details will be sent to you prior to the event confirming to which district you have been assigned along with the exact meeting location. A district leader will be present at each site to coordinate volunteer activities. You do not need to bring anything...just wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

The event itself will start at 9:00 AM and last until 12:00 PM. Immediately following the event, a post-event, with lunch catered by The Hershey Pantry, will be held under a tent set up outside the University Fitness Center on the Hershey Medical Center campus.

Again, thank you for volunteering! See you April 30th!

If people who are not already pre-registered are looking for a place to volunteer, we still need extra help at these locations:

District 2: Stauffer's of Kissel Hill (please bring boots/footwear and clothing that can get wet)
District 4: Parking Lot of the Hershey Tech Building (next to Friendly's Restaurant)
District 5: Hershey Center for Applied Research (we'll be planting trees at this location at 1pm, so please come if you'd like to help with that!)

We've been getting many requests to volunteer. To help us organize our lists of volunteers, please fill out our volunteer registration form HERE. Then we'll contact you as April 18th approaches. We have just transitioned our Committee to a new group of first year medical students who have already started planning for next year’s event in April. Time to Plan for Kiss Hershey Back 2009

Kiss Hershey Back 2008, the Hershey community's first litter clean-up day, was an exciting success, with more 700 volunteers, seven young trees planted, and miles of roadway and greenway cleaned up.

Planning for the second annual Kiss Hershey Back community clean-up day is underway, and event organizers—Penn State College of Medicine students and community representatives—want your help. Volunteers are needed for a variety of important tasks to make Kiss Hershey Back 2009 on April 18, 2009, as successful as last spring's event.

Want to get involved?

Whether you have a little time or a lot, or whether you want to volunteer alone or with a community organization, event planners want to hear from you. Join medical students for an organizational meeting on the campus of Penn State College of Medicine on Sept. 24, from noon-1:15 p.m. Enjoy light refreshments, watch a short video segment about Kiss Hershey Back, and learn more about the event from representatives of the 2008 community partners—The Milton Hershey School, The Hershey Co., and Derry Twp.

Districts Reporting

Another huge thank you to district leaders and other volunteers, including the Hershey Company's three representatives who attended our meeting today. Meeting locations are being turned in and the township has been surveyed for litter-pick-up potential. Among other things at our meeting today, it was announced that the Hershey Company is trying to get 600 of their employees to come out to volunteer at the event, that whatever extra funds are raised from the event will go to planting trees in the township, and that publicity is our next big focus.

The Community Takes A Big Chunk

We want to thank those new District Leaders and community members who came to our meeting Monday and who have taken a big chunk of responsibility to organize the township's clean-up efforts and the luncheon planned for the event afterwards. We are finalizing videos and flyers to get out to the community soon. Mr. Michael H.W. Pries, chairman of the Board of Supervisors for Derry Township, recorded a voice over for us to use on our upcoming video annoucement of the event to be shown in PSUCOM classes and throughout the school district and Milton Hershey School system.

Feb 11th meeting

We've opened a financial account for the project and have begun to receive the first cash donations. We've divided up the map into areas and are preparing to present videos to both PSUCOM and Hershey School District students. We are preparing to hang a banner over highway 422 near Staples and we are finalizing plans to secure all over our precinct or district leaders.

Feb 6th meeting

We want to thank those person who came to our meeting on Feb 6th and supported the event. We recruited district leaders and discussed their responsibilities. Also, we are attempting to plan for first aid and safety at each of the meeting places, including maybe EMS volunteers and first aid kits.

Volunteers Invited!

Businesses have been sent letters. We've received much publicity. Volunteers have been contacting us. The community is getting involved. Our next steps are to finalize business sponsors, to finalize gathering spots, and to recruit precinct leaders for the day of the event. The rest of all our meetings have been scheduled and anyone interested is invited to come, although attendance is not required to participate.

Today's meeting resulted in some excitement about finally being able to divide the township into areas and really make some progress in contacting businesses. We are finalizing plans to get sponsorship from the Med Center and to set up a bank account for the project. The video for the project is coming along and we made plans on how we'd like to finish that today. A reporter from The Sun: Covering Hershey, Hummelstown, and Lower Dauphin County sat in on our meeting today and our final press release and letter to the editor should be going out this week or next. By our next meeting we fully expect to have individual businesses and churches contacted and lined up to sponsor or participate in the event.

2,200 VOLUNTEERS!

At today's meeting, plans were made for an official logo, and finalizing our press release. Focus is currently being made on reaching out to businesses to become sponsors, specifically the Medical Center, from the Hershey Company, and from businesses belonging to the Hershey Partnership of businesses. We're working on getting a video advertisement ready. The committee has set its goal of having 2,200 volunteers come out for the event, approximately 10% of the township's population.

Meeting with Derry Township Liaison

Our meeting with the township liaison yielded a good harvest. We will be attaining maps of the township the week of December 10th. Permission has been granted to be included in the township's Spring newsletter. Specific areas needing clean-up were given to us as suggestions. efforts are being made to see how we can hang up a banner across highway 422 near Staples. While working on busy roads, the township will be able to provide vests and signs saying "Men Working." And finally, the liaison suggested making posters to display in the library, the administration building, the rec center, etc.

Plans Moving Forward

Today's committee meeting resulted in some exciting ideas and plans. Initial efforts are being made to prepare press releases for local newspapers including the The Sun: Covering Hershey, Hummelstown, and Lower Dauphin County and the Harrisburg Patriot News. Strategic Services is preparing a letter for television providers for a possible media sponsor for the event. Draft letters are being written for local businesses and organizations to endorse the event. Contacts are being made to the Churches of Hershey. Approval from the Superintendent of Derry Township School District was acquired and further efforts are being made to prepare for advertisement in public schools and the Milton Hershey School. A meeting with Derry Township's liaison is scheduled and plans are going forward to identify zones of the township that need cleaning and also plans for advertisement in the form of a banner to possibly be hung over highway 422. Efforts are being made to set up a financial account with which to receive donations. Finally, Derry Township offered trash pick-up service support for the event in April.

We've Gone Official!

Marked by approval from the Associate Dean of the College of Medicine, Penn State Strategic Services, and Derry Township's Board of Supervisors, we're officially official! Organizers are now working to acquire approval from the Student Assembly at the College of Medicine and support from local businesses and newspapers.
